The Baptism Site, known as Bethany beyond the Jordan River.
This unique site is where 2000 years ago Jesus came to see John to be baptized by him. According to the Bible, it is Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing, on the East Bank of the River Jordan, in what is now the modern day Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

Jesus Baptism Site Tours & Information
Because this site marks the baptism of Jesus by John, and thus the beginning of Jesus’ mission and indeed the beginning of Christianity, it is considered to be one of the three holiest Christian sites in the world, together with Bethlehem (the Church of the Nativity) were Jesus was born and Jerusalem (the Church of the Holy Sepulcher) where Jesus’ terrestrial mission ended (at least until the Second Coming).
Bethany The Beyond Jordan Tours.
Bethany beyond the Jordan River has been recognized, by all major traditional Christian Churches, as the site where Jesus was baptized and has been visited by many Christian leaders including the late great Pope John Paul II in 2000 ,H.H. Pope Benedict in May 2009 and H.H. Pope Francis in May 2014. Many churches of different Christian denominations [Anglican, Armenian, Catholic, Coptic and Russian] are being built, on land donated by H.M. Abdullah II, the king of Jordan. This historical site is also where a number of other important spiritual events occurred in the Bible: apart from John’s ministry and Jesus’ baptism, it is where the Israelites, led by Joshua, first crossed into the Promised Land, and it is where Elijah ascended into Heaven in a whirlwind on a chariot of fire. It is also the site where the St. Mary the Egyptian and other early Christian holy figures lived and died. The area is also associated with the biblical account of how the Prophet Elijah (Mar Elias in Arabic) ascended to heaven.
